A few days ago Mohammad Bajammal sent me an improved version of the bookmarklet code generated by my BibConverter tool. The new version of the bookmarklet automatically selects all text on the current page an submits it to BibConverter. The previous version required you to first select all text and then activate the bookmarklet. I have now updated the online BibConverter script to generate the new bookmarklet code. This means that you now can convert bibliographic entries from IEEEXplore, Engineering Village 2 and ISI Web of Science to BibTeX records with just one click!

Note: The new bookmarklet currently only works with Firefox.

For those of you who are not familiar with BibConverter, here is a brief summary:

BibConverter is a simple web application for direct conversion of data from online bibliographic databases to the BibTeX format. It extracts data from text copied directly from the web page and outputs BibTeX records that contains much more information than citations exported using the export functionality provided by the bibliographic services. BibConverter currently supports conversion of data from IEEEXplore, Engineering Village 2 and ISI Web of Science

BibConverter has saved me from a lot of boring and tedious typing. Judging from the web logs it seems that BibConverter’s popularity is slowly decreasing. This is probably due to competition from Firefox extensions like Zotero. I highly recommend trying Zotero. It is a useful research tool, but if you just want to put a reference into your BibTeX file BibConverter is usually faster.

    Why not use JabRef?

@Aaron. I wrote BibConverter long before Jabref could fetch data from IEEEXplore. Jabref is a great tool, so if you prefer an integrated solution and you are satisfied with the retrieved data that's fine. However, last time I checked Jabref only had support for IEEEXplore, medline and citeseer. No Web of Science or Engineering Village support. This may have changed in recent versions.
